Lexmark X502n

Based on the same design and print engine used to power the Lexmark c500 family of color lasers, the Lexmark X502n is a quality multifunction from a respected manufacturer. Lexmark seemed to come out of nowhere and suddenly appear on the scene with a series of great products. We now expect that of them, and the X502n doesn’t disappoint.

The laser engine inside the X502n is of the single-pass variety, with a per sheet print speed of 31 per minute when producing in monochrome and 8 pages per minute in color. Unusually copy speeds top out at 21ppm for mono prints. It is often the norm to be able to print and copy at much the same rate.

A color scanner and 35 page document feeder also forms part of the X502n. This enables the device to be used as a copier. There is also a fax modem so the X502n can perform all the functions required of a true multifunction.

There is a built-in paper drawer that can cope with 250 sheets and can be expanded to 880, with an optional 530 sheet drawer. Unlike a standalone laser there is no manual feed slot. Odd shaped media like cards, envelopes and flyers have to be loaded via the built-in paper tray.

Print quality is very good with a maximum resolution of 1,200 x 600 dpi and driver support for both Windows and Mac. It is also an easy printer to maintain, with the toner cartridges clipping in behind a door at the front of the unit. As it is based on the same laser as the c500, it can use the same cartridges available from a number of suppliers.

A comprehensive control panel with a backlit LCD is easy to use and quick to get the hang of. Most of the functions are straightforward but we did need help scanning to a network PC or an e-mail address. Both require the destinations to be configured in advance via the web-based management interface. Apart from that little issue, the X502n is simple and easy to use.

Overall the X502n is a good all-round device. It offers everything a small or home office might need to get the job done. It has everything apart from a duplexer, the print quality and speed are enough to keep even the most demanding office happy.

HP LaserJet 4000

The HP LaserJet 4000 is a decently capable small monochrome printer that can cope with a small to mid-sized workgroup. In typical Hewlett Packard style, its small, functional and solidly built. Not much to look at but lets its results speak for themselves.

Productivity is the name of the game and the 4000 doesnt disappoint. At 17 pages per minute, its a steady performer, but the real delight is in the quality of the documents it produces. Text is rich and strong, black is black and lacks any jaggies, blemishes or smudging. The stark contrast between black and white is plain for all to see, which is the mark of a good printer.

It also handles graphs, images and photographs remarkably well. Laser printers are predominantly text printers that can handle the occasional image. The LaserJet 4000 doesnt blink when presented with a page of photographs or a PowerPoint with graphs. The detail is good considering its a laser, the grayscale works well translating color photos and images, with even tones and smooth transitions throughout.

The printer has 4Mb memory, with the option to upgrade it to 100Mb, and the RISC processor has enough power to cope with just about anything you can throw at it. That processor is the reason it didnt even blink when we gave it our test document. They are small, cool and powerful pieces of hardware and work well in this device.

Measuring just 39cm x 50 x 35cm and weighing in at 18Kg this isnt a big printer. It modest size and network capability offers a lot of freedom when it comes to placing and using it. The 250 sheet paper drawer and 100 sheet multipurpose tray will keep it going for a while, as will the cartridges which will last 10,000 pages for a normal one and 15,000 for a high yield version. Replacements are easy to install with the lifting of a flap and moving a couple of levers, they are designed to be easily maintained and succeed.

The LaserJet 4000 is a good little printer that will sit quietly until you need it then spring into action. It isnt big, flashy or ostentatious but it is reliable, sturdy and produces prints of an excellent quality at a decent speed. This is one printer any business would be glad to own.

Konica Minolta MagiColor 5450 DL

The Konica Minolta MagiColor 5450DL is another quality printer from the Japanese camera manufacturer. It builds on the successes of the 5430 and 5440DL series and improves on almost everything.

The 5450DL is a color laser printer that has a duty cycle of up to 60,000 copies per month, so is aimed directly at business customers. It is designed to handle everything the average office or workgroup needs with practised ease and never give any problems. The design is the standard functional cude shape and measures somewhere around 20 x 16.5 x 16.5, and weighin in at something like 60 lbs. This really isn’t a printer for the feint hearted or space limited office.

It performs well though. Producing monochrome prints at a rate of 27 pages per minute for both mono and color. While not the fastest on the market, it is fast enough to hold it’s own against the competition.

The print quality is good, at a standard resoltuion of 9600 x 600 dpi. The monochrome text reproduction is the real strength of the 5450DL. While printing images is never a laser printers strong point, the image quality is high enough for basic marketing or promotional materials, with only a little banding when translating full color pages into monochrome. Printing color is also reassuring as the machine produces great quality text and images from our test document.

The 667Mhz processor and 128Mb memory is horsepower enough for even the most demanding projects. It can be connected via USB or via network and doesn’t use the host PC protocol of it’s predecessors. It was found to be a bit of a shortcoming, which is why this iteration has it’s own processor and enough memory to cope with larger jobs.

The paper drawer is at the bottom fron of the machine and can handle up to 500 sheets. There is also a 100 sheet multi-purpose drawer at the topwhich can either be used for non-standard media, or in addition to the paper drawer to take it’s total capacity to 600. As with other Minolta models there is also the option to increase paper handling by 1000 sheets by adding a pair of 500 sheet drawers to the bottom of it.

Replacement toner is plentiful and most online retailers stock them. The standard toner comes with a built in drum and can print approximately 6000 pages each. At $99, they are competitlvely priced and offer a lower cost per page than many other manufacturers on the market.

The 5450DL is a solid, practical printer. It is ideally placed to fulfill the needs of the larger office or workgroup.

HP LaserJet 4240N

We have several HP LaserJet 4240Ns in our office, and have done for years. They are very quick monochrome printers, at around 40 pages a minute and they are fast to react as the print job starts almost instantaneously.

Despite its modest appearance, the LaserJet 4240N is an enterprise level printer that can be apparently expanded to cope with a lot more than we ask of it. We have the standard 500 sheet paper tray and the duplexer, which was optional. The paper handling can be expanded to 3100 sheets, the memory can also be increased, there are paper handlers, finishers, staplers and stackers.

The Hewlett Packard quick start technology reduces waiting time for warm up. This is where the almost instantaneous start comes from. There is something special in the toner that doesnt need warming up like other ones so when you sent it a print command, it picks it up and gets started almost immediately. This is great if you need something in a hurry. While it doesnt make much difference in real terms, psychologically a fast response in a busy office does make a lot of difference.

As well as being quick, each of those 40 pages a minute are printed perfectly. The text is spot-on. Smooth, definite, sharp and clear are some of the words I would use to describe them. Photos and images are much the same quality. Theres quite a lot of detail printed onto the page with either of them. Photographs, although black and white are still good to look at and look exactly like they should.

The 4240N is fast also because it has a fast 460Mhz processor, and with the memory expandable to 512Mb, that makes it pretty powerful for a printer. That and the ability to network it is what makes it suitable for an enterprise. While our office hardly constitutes an enterprise, it does make a real difference being able to print and control the printer over the network.

The HP LaserJet 4240N is a great printer, we like them so much we have several of them. Theyre quick, good and can be left alone to do their thing once you load it with paper. They are ideal for impatient people like me who want things now, while not compromising on quality.

Lanier LD015

Lanier Worldwide Inc launched the Lanier LD015 multifunction device that can produce a range of quality business documents at 600 dpi at over 15 pages per minute.

The Lanier LD015 was designed to be versatile and meet the needs of the different environments it is likely to work. It’s fast enough to satisfy time conscious users, good enough for the detail oriented and quiet enough for those who work in smaller offices and don’t want to listen to the machine working all day.

This device will suit workgroups of up to 20 people and brings quality printing to the widest possible audience. You no longer have to be a large corporation or multi-national to enjoy the benefits of Lanier systems, now everyone can print high quality documents quickly.

There are three varieties of LD015, the LD015 which offers printing and copying. The LD015f offers printing, copying and fax, while the LD015spf offers network scanning, copying and printing as well as scanning. Each has an automatic duplexer and automatic sorting to speed up production.

The LD015spf also offers scan to email, internet faxing and other value add features to ensure business productivity is never waiting for the LD015. All devices can be easily networked once connected to a router. Basic functions are available immediately, once discovered on a network, and the more advanced features are only a driver install away.

The SmartDeviceMonitor software allows administrators to keep an eye on the device and offers a full range of diagnostic utilities. The Web Image Monitor also allows for remote management tasks through a browser, including monitoring toner levels, paper levels, duty cycle and daily usage.

The control panel allows up front control, the printer and copier only option including a cut-down version with a clear LCD screen and clear function buttons. Add the fax and scanner and the panel doubles in size. The screen, and extra buttons are still clear and easy to read despite the small footprint.

Overall the LD015 is a good, workhorse device in whatever configuration you choose. The modular nature of it makes sense, if an office doesn’t scan there is no point paying for a scanner, likewise for fax. By offering the ability to pick and choose the features, the LD015 can fit into many more workgroups that many of its competitors.

HP Color LaserJet CP4005n

This stylish color laser jet printer has an amazing speed through which it is able to print 30 black and white papers per minute and 25 color papers per minute. This fast speed of this printer makes it the best choice for all work teams. We are a small work team however at times we are burdened with large workloads so we have to have large number of print outs in a little time, at such a time I deeply feel blessed to have this printer at our office.

The HP Color LaserJet CP4005n has a high speed USB 2.0 port as well as input capacity to as large an extent as 600 sheets. It carries 600 x 600 dpi resolutions which cannot be better for us. Its color quality is superb and that is why it can be relied on for all occasions and uses.

Its RAM memory size is just suitable for all types of use and extends to about 128 MB. This work group color printer is compatible with media type which includes envelopes, cards, high gloss papers, plain papers, labels and a lot more. It does not include a scanner otherwise it would have been complete in all aspects for office use. It has its own print server and print interface which includes USB and Ethernet 10/100 Base TX.

One of the main things is that it is compatible with all sorts of systems therefore it can easily work throughout the work team systems for instance it can function with systems such as Microsoft windows 2000, XP, Professional X64, home edition, XP professional and others.

The printer is available with cartridges already installed in it before it reaches the customer, therefore there are no hassles and no need of a printer specialist around. The system can be installed easily on all the PCs and networking is also a matter of just a few clicks. This makes it a superb choice because there is not much time in the office to keep installing and setting up the system so the ease it provides is really commendable.

We have been using it for quite some time now; at times the work load is high while it is also low at other times. However during these 6 to 7 months of its use, we have never experienced any technical problems with this printer. It works well and hardly ever is jammed.

Xerox Phaser 6120

The Xerox Phaser 6120 is a good looking color laser printer from the company’s ever growing inventory of top notch devices for the office. Mainly know for its photocopiers, Xerox has been making inroads on the printer market for a few years now. They are never the cheapest around, but they almost certainly offer the most value for money of any other brand we know.

The usual grey or beige box is nowhere to be seen in the 6120, instead we have a cream box with navy blue panels. It’s surprising how much difference the hint of color is to the overall aesthetics of the machine. While not bulky by any means, the 6120 is a large printer.

Paper is loaded through a 200 sheet paper tray at the bottom and feeds through to the top where it outputs on the top cover. The paper tray can be expanded to 500 sheets for heavier users along with the memory, hard drive and duplexing. This makes the 6120 a very flexible and customizable unit.

On the top right is a small control panel with grayscale LCD. The ring of four buttons surrounds the center one are all easy to use, and easy to select individually without accidentally hitting one of the others. The screen is a bit dim, and can be hard to read, but the functions are intuitive enough to not need much reference.

Lifting the top cover and folding down the front exposes the toners. There are four in total, the black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Once exposed they are pretty easy to swap out and for once, the starter cartridges are already installed!

Print quality overall was excellent. Both solid colors, business graphics and photos were reproduced with surprising accuracy. Photo images are also free of noticeable banding and color is graduated nicely. Even shadow detail is better reproduced than on many other color lasers weve tested, including some much more expensive ones.

The Phaser 6120 averaged print speeds of around 10 pages per minute for black text and just over 2 for color. It takes a little over a minute for internal diagnostics and set up when you switch it on at the start of the day before you see any prints, but once warm, response time is good.

The Phaser 6120 is a good quality printer that would be right at home in a small or home office. The reproduction is of good enough quality for almost any use. The flexibility of being able to upgrade the machine as you go along is also a great selling feature. We would have no compunction about recommending this printer to anyone.

Konica Minolta BizHub C35 Printer Review

Overview:

If you are the owner of an office with many employees and an intense activity, the printer Konica Minolta BizHub C35 is a remarkable option that you can rely on. With a speed which reaches 25 pages per minute and a short time to warm up, this printer offers high quality level for the printed documents.

Pros:

Konica Bizhub C35 is a real four-in-one device which is able to work with maximum of efficiency as scanner, copier, printer and built-in fax. Actually it is all in a single package that provides the services required by the activity of a medium office. You don’t need a large area for its placement because the size best suits all the features.

This printer is the best alternative for offices that have plenty of work to do. It can work many hours a day and it doesn’t block the paper. The quality of the printed pages is excellent. Also, the copies are very clear so that even the small fonts like four points are read. Both the text copies and the photo reproductions have fidelity and the colours are full of life.
The device can easily be connected to the office network. The installation of the software is easy enough and you can do it by yourself. You don’t have to spend some extra money for it. Just keep in mind that a printer which has a lot of printing to do should have a low amount of energy used. This one has it indeed. So, beside all the other qualities it is a friend of the environment too.

The toner of Konica Bizhub C35 comes with the function saver mode. The toner cartridges can be refilled. The manual of the printer has an easy to install guide and it presents all the details about the technical features. The multifunction device can be connected to any personal computer. The price of the printer matches perfect with all its features and capabilities. You will get used to hear its noise day after day because it is a hard working and powerful device. It will take you some time to understand that this printer can do a lot of things that will make your life easier.

Cons:

There is an aspect that the Konika Minolta producer didn’t take into account. The paper handling is too limited. In addition, it is missing an automatic duplexer. These two problems are decreasing a little the value of the multifunctional printer.
