Brother HL 2700CN

The Brother HL-2700CN is another good quality color laser printer aimed squarely at the small business or workgroup. It offers a good balance of affordability and features and is robust enough to be able to service most needs. It is definitely worth considering if you’re in the market for a color laser printer.

With color lasers becoming cheaper by the month, they are becoming more and more popular is smaller offices and homes. The HL-2700CN is such a printer. It would have cost four times as much a year ago, but is now affordable enough that home users could enjoy color laser printing.

The controls are simple but effective. They are intuitive enough to be able to service most needs and the helpful LCD screen is easy to read. The paper drawer is surprisingly modest at 250 sheets, but it upgradeable to 530 if needed. The only thing this printer lacks is a single sheet feeder for special media.

Out of the box, the HL-2700CN is quick and easy to install and configure. The toners are supplied already fitted but have to be removed in order to take off the plastic covers. Even though you have to remove them, it is still much easier than having them packed separately. Once unpacked the printer can be connected via USB, parallel or Ethernet. The drivers are straightforward, as is the supplied software package. It contains most features a small office would need to print a variety of documents and images.

There is also a guided help program included which includes a flash based troubleshooting guide. This is remarkably helpful in isolating faults if something goes wrong, and is a valuable addition to the features already included.

Monochrome reproduction is good, with text appearing clean and fresh. Business images looked a bit on the bright side, which is actually good for presentations or handouts. Photographic reproduction isn’t so good though, with none of the subtleness a photo needs. With a print speed of 31 pages per minute for monochrome and 8 pages for color, it is a quick mover for such an affordable machine.

Overall, the HL-2700CN is a good, value for money office device with a rich enough featureset to satisfy most office needs. It’s strength is its versatility and cost effectiveness. Replacement consumables are readily available and good value, while robust enough to last the test of time.
