Epson Stylus Photo R280
People often want one stop for all the printing needs, and so keeping this very idea in mind, the innovators at Epson made the R280. The Epson Stylus Photo R280 is a single function photo printer which offers hi definition resolutions and outstanding quality in print-outs for a remarkably low price
The Epson R280 is not only cheaper than its competitive inkjet printers but also has a better result. It has a new Claria ink technology that results in high definition printing capability. It uses 6 cartridges and works well in Windows Vista, XP Professional, XP, and 2000 and even Macintosh X 10.2.8, 10.3.9, 10.4.x or later operating systems. It can also print directly onto compatible CDs and DVDs, has a fast printing speed and does not make much noise too. It can print 4” x 6” photo in as fast as 11 seconds which are water and fade resistant. It can also print up to 38 pages of plain text in just one minute.
It comes with a disk that contains all the necessary drivers and software. Once you have installed the drivers and ink, you can start printing – simple as that. It has a built-in auto photo correction, which corrects poorly exposed photos automatically. The printer comes with 1 year warranty that Epson has given. It is easy to handle with a quick dry time and its options are user friendly.
The high speed printing of Epson R280 enables you to make printouts quickly and save your precious time and with its six individual ink cartridges, the photos printed by Epson R280 are smudge, scratch, water and fade resistant. Claria Hi Definition Ink for photos that comes with this printer lasts up to 200 years. Epson stylus photo R280 is a wonderful machine with some great functions.
Printing is remarkably smooth with the R280, it doesn’t make much noise while printing like other printers. Epson has done it again, like always they have come up with a new and great product. Epson stylus photo R280’s slim design makes it ideal to fit in smaller spaces and this printer prints high quality documents and photos, whether it’s your college assignment or an office document, or a photo of your family. Kyocera Mita FS 1030D
Kyocera’s design philosophy is to make all their office equipment durable, cost effective and cheap to run. The drum units are lifetime components meaning they don’t need changing, which is why they can claim less than 1 cent per sheet print cost. That is one of the cheapest per pages costs of any printer.
The FS-1030D has a 250 paper tray and a 50 sheet multi-purpose tray, making its total capacity 300 sheets. There is the option to add a second 250 sheet tray as well as a printer stand. The multi-purpose tray is behind a fold down flap at the front. Duplex printing halves the print speed at 11 pages per minute, which is average as the paper has to make two passes to print the other side.
The print quality is good, single or double sided. It prints clear, sharp text with good edging, fill and detail. Images and photos are equally good, with accurate monochrome shading, no visible banding and decent halftones.
Consumables for the FS-1030D cost around $25 for a 7200 page toner cartridge which confirms Kyocera’s assertion of a less than 1 cent page. These are replaced through a flap at the front and just drop into place, making them one of the easier cartridges to change. When you have added new toner, the printer will initialize it which will take around 10-15 minutes. This is just a one off so it doesn’t happen every day.
There is no control panel to speak of, just four LEDs, two green and two orange for power, data, paper level and toner levels. That is about all you need though so it doesn’t sell you short.
Connection is made via USB or parallel, although there is the option to add a network interface. The driver CD contains all Kyocera’s drivers, not just the one for the FS-1030D. You have to connect the printer first, then select the most appropriate, rather than the usual auto detect or double clicking the .exe.
The FS-1030D is a well designed printer that is well suited to the small office or workgroup. The option to scale up will suit many smaller businesses. Overall, a good printer.

Ricoh Aficio MP161
The Aficio MP161 comes in three variations. The straight MP161, which is a basic monochrome printer, copier, scanner and fax. The MP161L which adds a color scanner and the MP161LN which adds networking.
The machine itself is a standard looking multifunction device. There is a paper feeder on top of the scanner flatbed, then a control panel near the top at the front, the some drawers below.
All versions of the MP161 have built in duplexing, with the 50 sheet automatic document feeder also being auto reverse to effectively feed that duplexer. This is an often overlooked feature in multifunction devices, manufacturers preferring to spend money and effort on other functions.
Printing and copying is where the MP161’s strength lies. It produces good quality, competent prints that are of a good enough quality to be suitable for any office at a standard 600 dpi. Toner is deposited cleanly on the page, edges are smooth and sharp and text is accurate everywhere between 4pt and 48pt. At 16 pages per minute it isn’t the fastest printer in the world, but the quality is worth waiting for.
Scanning is perfectly adequate, with a mono scanner in the MP161 and color in the MP161L and LN. The color scanner reproduction is good, with all colors being faithful to the original, if a little dark. The full size flatbed can accommodate books and magazines for non-standard scanning, and even though the lid couldn’t shut properly, it didn’t detract from the quality.
The fax is just that. A fax with standard features, memory, auto dial, auto answer and a full sized keypad on the control panel.
Physically, the MP161 isn’t massive, isn’t too loud and can be expanded enough to grow as an office expands. The standard memory of 48Mb in the MP161 is enough for most needs but can be expanded. The MP161L/LN come with 80Mb which is also expandable. There is a 250 sheet paper drawer that can also be enlarged by a 500 page drawer. There is also a 100 page multifunction bypass tray and the automatic document feeder.
The toner is very reasonably priced at $19 for 7000 pages, which brings the cost per page right down. This just adds to the attractiveness of the MP161 overall.
Savin 2522
It is a monochrome “document manager”, which is business speak for a printer that can copy and scan as well. You can buy an add-on that allows you to fax, but we didn’t have that one as we have fax-from desktop to a fax server.
One things to say about it is that it is big. Fortunately it was installed for us, I wouldn’t have wanted to try to lift it. There is a blue touch screen at the front which has a full QWERTY keyboard, which is a nice touch. I had never seen one of those before. All of the icons are large and clear, and it is easy to select the mode you want without accidentally hitting others.
The printer and copier are both really flexible. We print a lot of documents, and sometimes have to manipulate them a bit. The Savin 2522 lets us resize, twist, turn, flip and move images and pages exactly how we want, then print them pretty quick.
The printing itself is quick, it does about 20 pages per minute, and they are great pages too. We print a mix of text and images, and there are three modes to match. Text, Image and Text/image. The last one is for a page with a mixture of images or photos and writing. That’s the one we use the most.
There are 5 different paper trays, giving us 3100 sheets paper capacity. There is a built-in hard drive where we load up the larger print jobs and have them scheduled for early morning, so they are ready for when we come in. The copier is quick too, but we don’t use it much.
Scanning is another great feature of the 2522. We archive lots of older documents and we can load them all up into the feeder and let them process automatically. The scanner does about 25 pages a minute and can send them straight to my PC.
Toner is easy to change, you just have to pull down the flap and swap them out. Using the Savin 2522 is easy. Nobody has a problem with working with it. It’s quick enough for even the most impatient of us, and good enough for the most demanding.
I like the Savin 2522 and would recommend it for any office that produces a lot of documentation.

Pitney Bowes IM 4511
It is actually a pretty good multifunction. I thought I had seen them all, from the noisy, messy clunkers in the seventies, to the massive machines that used to make the floor vibrate in the eighties, getting smaller and more useful through the nineties, and now, in the new century we have this. A very useful and capable piece of office equipment.
It can fax, copy, print and scan all from one decent sized unit. It does them all in black and white. But we aren’t designers, so don’t need color. It isn’t massive, it doesn’t smoke, or make the floor vibrate. In fact it doesn’t make that much noise either. It just sits in the corner doing its thing day after day.
The controls are simple enough that even an old man like me can cope with them. There is a simple control panel near the top with a little gray LCD screen. All the buttons are spaced enough apart that chubby fingers won’t order 999 copies instead of 99, and they are logically grouped and well labeled.
I think it copies somewhere around the 12 pages per minute mark. Copying is about the same. Printing or copying text gives us clear black lettering where all the edges are smooth and no extra bits of ink poking out. Scanning is much the same, it gives us a black, gray and white image of anything we put in there, including color photographs or images.
The fax is about as easy as they come. Everything is set up as a speed dial and we tend to schedule all our faxes to be sent at once so the memory must be good for at least 100 pages. It doesn’t take it long to send them all either, maybe a couple of seconds for each page, something like that.
Overall, the Pitney Bowes IM-4511 is a good device to work with. It doesn’t trouble me as long as I don’t trouble it. It prints, copies and scans well. Faxes are handled quickly and quietly and you can’t even hear the dial tone. I think it will probably still be here doing it’s thing long after I’ve gone.
Konica Minolta MagiColor 2400w
The first thing to say about it is that is looks cool with the blue top. It’s a nice addition to the office and adds a bit of color to the place. Everything else we have are just beige boxes, so the blue makes a nice change.
One of the things we were most worried about with this was whether it would cope with four of us and our printing requirements. The box isn’t that big, in fact to look at the printer looks like one you would have at home. It’s about the same size as a personal printer, and about the same weight.
I needn’t have worried though because it has coped with everything we could throw at it for the past four years and hasn’t stuttered once. Between us we print between 10 and 12000 sheets a month. The MagiColor 2400w can apparently cope with 35000, so that might be why.
Setting it up was easy. All we had to do was unpack it, undo all the restraining tape and plug it in. The cartridges were already installed so we didn’t even have to do that. It has a USB connection which we set up on one of the spare computers and everything worked perfectly once the drivers were installed. The drivers didn’t take too long either, the CD which was in the box does everything for you, it’s just a matter of telling it where to put the files. Once done, we could access the PC through our network and print like that.
It prints pretty quick too, black and white printing is the fastest, at around 20 pages per minute. Color was a bit slower at 5 pages per minute, but the prints were good quality though. We don’t print many photos, but when we do that come out pretty good. We used to use an inkjet for them, but with the MagiColor 2400w, we can just print them as normal now.
Text documents come out really clear especially when printing at normal size. Graphs and office images come out very clear, the colors in the graphs look exactly the same as they do on the screen. Photographs was the most surprising thing, they are really good for a laser printer. They come out better on this, than on the old inkjet.

Brother MFC 8220
Brother MFC-8220 is a multi function laser machine that has copying, faxing, printing as well as scanning options. It can be used as a standalone fax machine or in conjunction with a computer system as it has a USB port along with a parallel networking interface. The entire multi-function system comes with the following essential equipment like toner cartridge, power cord, drum unit as well as power and phone cords, a handset with cord and a document feeder with a 250-sheet paper tray as well as the manual a setup card for quick installation.
A 250 paper tray capacity enables easy and fast printing and scanning of up to 21 pages per minute. Being a monochrome scanner, this machine offers up to 2400 x 600 dpi print resolution, 300 x 600 dpi monochrome scan resolution and 9,600 dpi enhanced resolution for the varying needs it will satisfy.
The drawbacks associated with this printer include being a little noisy and the occasional paper jam. Other than that it’s an ideal device that offers affordability, reliability and speed in one machine. Its ability to enlarge documents up to 400%, print Asian fonts and the additional handset which can be used as a phone, all make this a great unit. All in all, this machine is a comprehensive device perfect to be used for domestic or work purposes.
Its 32 MB memory is more than that of the previous models. This offers a bit more to heavy fax or image heavy print users as it can spool more, or more complex jobs at once. Since the printing resolution is more than that of the scanning, which is 600 dpi, the device produces better prints of documents and images compared to scans or copies.
In short the Brother MFC-8220 is a highly affordable way of getting the best quality multi-function printer that provides convenience and perfection of use to the customers. It has been developed as a modified model of previous versions to cater to the array of requirements clients have during official or domestic work.

Hewlett Packard Printer Command Language Printer Languages
Hp PCL or Hewlett Packard Printer Command Language was introduced by the Hewlett-Packard. It is independent of host system, device drivers, I/O interface, and network communications. Its purpose is to bring all HP printers together under a common control structure. HP used it in its first desktop laser printer. PCL is an Escape Code language. HP has been using this language for its dot-matrix and inkjet printers before the invention of laser printers. PCL commands are compact escape sequence codes that are embedded in the print job before being sent to the printer. PCL fonts quickly translate application output into high quality raster print images. PCL has several versions available.
PCL 1
PCL 1 was introduced in 1980. It is simple language having capabilities for basic printing. PCL 1 prints nothing but only text. Supported by all HP LaserJet series printers (except the HP LaserJet 3100 and 3150 series products).
PCL 2
PCL 2 added Electronic Data Processing/Transaction functionality. Supported by all HP LaserJet series printers (except the HP LaserJet 3100 and 3150 series products).
PCL 3
PCL 3 was introduced in 1984 with the original HP LaserJet. Released with the following printers:
HP LaserJet series printer,
HP LaserJet Plus series printer.
It provided the commands and features required for simple high quality word processing and data printing. Allowed for the use of a limited number of bitmapped fonts and graphics.
PCL 3 provided simple word processing and data sharing. It supported not only small bitmap fonts but also small bitmap graphic printing. Many other manufacturers emulate PCL 3 referred to as LaserJet Plus emulation. PCL 3 is still in use on several impact printers which replaced the obsoleted HP models. It does not support downloadable or scalable fonts. It is pixel based printer language that primarily describes images by pixel.
PCL 4
Released with the following printers: HP LaserJet Series II, HP LaserJet IID, HP LaserJet IIP, and HP LaserJet IIP Plus series printers.
Provided new page printing capabilities. Supported macros, larger bitmapped fonts and graphics. Introduced in 1985.
The LaserJet Plus printer was superseded by the LaserJet series II, also an 8 p.p.m. printer. The LaserJet II series of printers included the LaserJet IIP, a 4 p.p.m. personal printer, and the LaserJet IID, a duplex version of the LaserJet II. The LaserJet II introduced the PCL 4 language, which built upon PCL 3 by adding the ability to use more, larger bitmap fonts, and more bitmap graphics. The standard LaserJet II could manage just over half a page of bitmap graphics, but with the addition of some extra memory this could be expanded to a whole page.
PCL 4 was introduced on the HP LaserJet II in 1985, adding macros, larger bitmapped fonts and graphics. PCL 4 is still popular for many applications.
PCL 4 was backwards compatible with PCL 3 (PCL 3 jobs would print perfectly well under PCL 4), but the additional features took it well beyond the bounds of word-processing, and allowed it to be used for charts, graphics and simple desktop publishing. PCL 4 has been superseded for office printers, but is still commonly used in personal printers as it requires relatively little processing power in comparison with later versions of the PCL language. The version of PCL 4 used on the LaserJet IIP was a slightly enhanced over the version used on the standard LaserJet, and provided a compression method for bitmap graphics to reduce the amount of data which the computer had to send to the printer.

Panasonic PanaFax UF 8000
The UF-8000 is a substantial machine, weighing in at a hefty 48.5lbs. Solidly built with well constructed drawers lid, output tray and control panel. The panel itself has a full QWERTY keyboard, that is slightly downsized but still perfectly usable. The controls are laid out in a logical manner and offer everything the average user needs.
The UF-8000 is an good performer, producing documents at a rate of 19 pages per minute at a resolution of 600dpi. Whether it’s a fax, print or copy, the print is crisp and clear with good shading on larger images.
The fax is exactly what you would expect from a multifunction. It can send and receive good quality faxes with the minimum of fuss. The controls on the panel include a full dialing keypad, auto dials, phone book, send later and other controls. The Super G3 modem will get the faxes to their destination in a little under 3 seconds per sheet and can broadcast to up to 330 destinations at once.
The copier is good, offering resize, rotate, multiple copies and other features. The native 600 dpi is clear and text is exact. Edges on both text and images were clean and free of jaggies. Grayscale was even across the images and the 256 shades were used to full effect when copying color images.
The UF-8000 is very easy to work with. The paper drawer holds 250 sheets, and the automatic document feeder a further 100. It can be connected via USB or Ethernet and will work with any Windows operating system.
The toner is easy to replace once it has printed 5000 pages or so. The cartridges come in two sizes, the basic 5000 page on and a high yield 10,000 page one. Seeing as there is only a moderate difference in cost between the two, it makes sense to opt for the high yield.
The UF-8000 is a good, value for money multifunction device that is aimed at the SOHO market. With ease of use and solid performance, this is a good buy if you’re in that market.

HP LaserJet 1100
The printer has a standard resolution of 600 dpi which is a perfectly decent resolution for a printer, especially a laser. It’s capable of 8 pages per minute and our experience is that it actually achieves that too. The printer can be connected using a parallel port or as is more commonly the case with a workgroup, network using the Ethernet adapter.
The paper tray can handle a total of 125 sheets, so while this has network capabilities, it might feel more at home as a single user or SOHO printer. I imagine larger workgroups might end up being a bit much for it after a while, especially with only 8Mb of memory.
We are such SOHO users, so can vouch for its capability as that. There are only three of us on our network and have yet to give the 1100 pause. We aren’t great printers, but there are times, especially when a deadline looms that things get a bit frenetic and we’re all trying to get our individual parts of a project done at once.
Print quality is second to none, even with only 600 dpi to work with. It doesn’t matter so much to a laser than to an inkjet. In our experience, coverage is much more even, precise and quicker than with ink. Photos and images are much better with an inkjet, but seem a bit more expensive to print. Our requirements are predominantly textual, so it matters little to us.
The LaserJet 1100 prints text well, whatever the size. We are journalists so we use standard fonts, MLA formatting and only the odd image, as the editor adds those himself. Test in Times New Roman is pretty standard, you can’t really go wrong with it, but when we print something non-work related, it handles other fonts and points very well indeed.
The HP LaserJet 1100 is a good old workhorse printer. While marketed at a workgroup, I’m not sure its suited to one larger than ours. It works well, prints well and has given us no trouble since we owned it.

HP Color LaserJet CP3505
It is quite big, measuring 16.25 x 20.07 x 22.44 inches and weighing almost 75 pounds, so it needs its own table or stand. When you need access to the paper drawer or to free jams you need more space at the front to fold down the flap. Its quite noisy, but then an office is anyway so it doesnt really disturb us too much.
We mainly print technical documentation for mobile engineers, who always seem to need something right away. Fortunately the printer is up to the task, reacting quickly, warming up quickly then printing quickly. At 22 pages per minute for either mono or color prints its plenty quick enough for our needs. Newer printers are quicker, but this one is so good we dont want to change it yet.
All Hewlett Packard products are well built and designed to last, the CP3505 is no exception. It has a duty cycle of 65,000 prints a month and is built to do it too.
We don’t print anything like that, around half I imagine, and it hasn’t let us down yet. It gets jammed occasionally, but the flap at the front exposes most of the paper path so they are easy to rectify.
The standard paper capacity is 850 sheets, which is enough for most uses. Just as well as you can’t expand it. You can add memory and a hard drive if you want, but we didn’t need to. It can be connected either by USB or network, we have it connected to our network and it works like a charm.
It also has a basic LCD screen and mini control panel on the top, but we mainly control it from the desktop using HP tools. We have a mixture of Windows and Mac computers here and it works with either of them without any fuss. I think the LaserJet CP3505 is just designed to work with the minimum of hassle. If it is, it succeeds very well.

Brother MFC 9420CN
The MFC-9420CN is a color multifunction device that offers color printing, copying, scanning and faxing. It isn’t the most subtle of office machines, especially when it’s working. It is quite noisy, and it won’t really fit quietly into a corner somewhere. This removes it from the home office market, but it is still very effective in the small business or office workgroup.
Setting up is easy, just a matter of unpacking everything and slotting it together. Connections are made by USB, parallel and Ethernet, which offer flexibility, and is easy to install into an existing workgroup. The paper tray holds up to 250 sheets, with a further 35 available in the automatic document feeder. Toner is easy to insert and remove and quite good value for money. Monochrome toner is good for 10000 pages of an average 5% coverage and color will cover 6600 pages.
The color fax is of excellent quality, both sending and receiving produced good clear results in no time at all. The simple fax controls on the panel are easy to use and contain all the functions you can think of.
Printing and copying is a real result. Image quality is excellent and monochrome text is especially crisp at standard resolution of 1200 x 2400dpi. There were rough transitions when reproducing photographs, but the overall quality was acceptable for normal use. The print speed averaged 31 pages per minute for monochrome and 8 pages for color.
Scanning is a delight, as the device is simple and effective, and produced excellent results when tested. The copy was just about identical to the original and came out in no time at all.
While capable of so much more, ideally this is a multifunction for the smaller workgroup who don’t print all that much. There are enough features to satisfy most needs, and the print quality is easily good enough for any office. Toner costs are remarkable low, with the 10000 page monochrome cartridge being a particularly good deal.
The MFC-9420CN is being marketed as a business friendly multifunction device, which it is. I think it will be a success, now and in the future.

A comparison of PCL6 and PCL5
PCL6 Advantages:
- It has better WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) printing, improved print quality, Tuer document fidelity.
- PCL6 is specially designed for graphics while gray-scale images, which are processed as objects, appear smooth and even, offering superior and fast print quality for graphics and scanned images.
- PCL 6 commands are designed to closely match Microsoft Windows graphical direct interface (GDI). Users will regain control of their PC and application sooner because PCL 6 allows the printer driver to translate GDI to PCL 6 faster than before.
- PCL6 commands are compiled before sending to the printer so network throughput will improve because of smaller and more compact commands. HP says that the data volume is 50 to 90 percent smaller than PCL5. Although PCL6 generates smaller file sizes in certain network configurations, the speed of todays host processors and networks may offset the performance benefits of having smaller file sizes.
- It has complete backward compatibility (can be used for older printer models)
Let have a look at the previous versions and history of PCL (Printer Control Language). PCL was was originally devised for the HP Dot Matrix and inkjet series printers. The first HP Laser Jet series printer was released in 1984 with the PCL 3 language. Other versions of PCL are:
PCL Modes:
The PCL language has four modes or ways of specifying and using color:
• Black-and-White (monochrome) mode is the default mode so that backward compatibility with previous printers is maintained. When the printer is turned on it has a 2-entry palette containing the color white at index 0 and black at index 1.
• Simple Color mode is entered with the Simple Color command, which creates one of three fixed color palettes: A monochrome, two-entry palette with white at index 0 and black at index 1.• An RGB, eight-entry palette with the following colors starting at index 0: black, red, green, yellow, blue, magenta, cyan, and white.• A CMY, eight-entry palette with the following colors starting at index 0: white, cyan, magenta, blue, yellow, green, red and black.
• PCL Imaging mode is entered with the Configure Image Data command that creates a programmable palette of aprogrammed size. This palette can be programmed using the color component and set index commands.
• HP-GL/2 Imaging mode is entered when HP GL/2 mode is entered and the initialize command IN creates a programmable palette that is shared between PCL and HP-GL/2.
Any and all of the modes can be used on a page. For example, you could enter the Simple Color mode to print a headline and bar chart, PCL imaging mode to print a photographic image, and Black-and-White mode for the text on the page.

Dell 1320C
The build quality is typical Dell. Solid and compact with no flimsy trays or flaps. The solid construction feels reassuring and safe, while the prints are good enough quality for most office applications. The standard 600dpi is enough for almost all applications. The monochrome prints appear after around 11 seconds of pressing Print, and are produced at around 16 pages per minute.
Text quality is good, with the edges appear straight with no bleed. Larger text of area of black were even, with no overprinting visible in the test. Color printing is just as good, with our color photograph being printed in 22 seconds. The overall quality was good, bearing in mind this is a laser printer.
Toner cartridges are replaced from the side, which is a departure from the norm, but works quite well. They are easily extracted using the clearly labeled latches and new ones clip into place after them. Both the monochrome and color cartridges are said to last for 2000 sheets, which isn’t as much as other Dell printers, but the price reflects that.
The printer will work pretty much out of the box. Installation is a bit of a pain, with lots of packing material to remove before installing the drum and toners. Driver installation is a breeze and will have you up and running in no time. The package contains all the tools necessary to print different sized documents on standard or odd-sized media. It even includes a setup video, which we advise you watch when you first get the printer out of the box.
Scalability is not an option, as what you see is what you get. There is no option to buy more paper trays, expand the memory or anything like that. In fact, the only addition you can make is to add an option network port. Seeing as this is most likely going to be in a small office, that benefit is negligible.
The 1320C is a good, quiet printer for those organizations who don’t print as much as some others. The quiet operation makes it ideal for the home office and the quality reproduction makes it suitable for most environments.
