Apple StyleWriter II test page
According to the StyleWriter II service manual, you can print a test page by turning the printer on and then pressing and holding the Online button (on the top of the printer) for about 6 seconds.
If that doesnt work, try the procedure mentioned on this page: turn off the printer and hold down the Power button until the printer turns on and prints out the test page.

HP Deskjet 5740 configuration self test page
To print a configuration/self-test page from a Deskjet 5740:
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Press and release the Resume button (the button with the arrow on it) four times.
- Release the Power button.
These instructions will also work for many other Deskjet models.
