Dell 1320C

The Dell 1320C is a simple, no-nonsense printer suitable for the small or home office or small workgroup. The no-frills black cube is an effective all round printer for low demand environments.

The build quality is typical Dell. Solid and compact with no flimsy trays or flaps. The solid construction feels reassuring and safe, while the prints are good enough quality for most office applications. The standard 600dpi is enough for almost all applications. The monochrome prints appear after around 11 seconds of pressing Print, and are produced at around 16 pages per minute.

Text quality is good, with the edges appear straight with no bleed. Larger text of area of black were even, with no overprinting visible in the test. Color printing is just as good, with our color photograph being printed in 22 seconds. The overall quality was good, bearing in mind this is a laser printer.

Toner cartridges are replaced from the side, which is a departure from the norm, but works quite well. They are easily extracted using the clearly labeled latches and new ones clip into place after them. Both the monochrome and color cartridges are said to last for 2000 sheets, which isn’t as much as other Dell printers, but the price reflects that.

The printer will work pretty much out of the box. Installation is a bit of a pain, with lots of packing material to remove before installing the drum and toners. Driver installation is a breeze and will have you up and running in no time. The package contains all the tools necessary to print different sized documents on standard or odd-sized media. It even includes a setup video, which we advise you watch when you first get the printer out of the box.

Scalability is not an option, as what you see is what you get. There is no option to buy more paper trays, expand the memory or anything like that. In fact, the only addition you can make is to add an option network port. Seeing as this is most likely going to be in a small office, that benefit is negligible.

The 1320C is a good, quiet printer for those organizations who don’t print as much as some others. The quiet operation makes it ideal for the home office and the quality reproduction makes it suitable for most environments.

Dell 3115cn

The Dell 3115cn is a multifunction printer for small or home offices where speed is more important than quality.

Despite looking quite ungainly the 3115cn is a good quality printer that works right out of the box. It is cheaper than its main rival, the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP and quicker too. Seeing as we are talking about speed, let’s get some facts.

The 3115cn prints text documents at a rate of 24 pages per minute, color or monochrome. Graphics are also printed at a respectable 5.4 pages per minute. This is faster than almost all the other printers in this price point, and a definite selling point to buyers.

The standard paper tray can hold 250 sheets, while the multi-purpose drawer can add a further 150. The automatic document feeder for the scanner holds 50 sheets too. The LCD screen is simple and often quite uninformative, but the menu is easy to navigate and the instructions quite intuitive. Once configured, there is no real reason to use the screen so it doesn’t really matter.

Being a network enabled device, the 3115cn can be added to a workgroup or network with ease. The built in Ethernet and print server provides a web interface where day to day administration can be carried out where necessary. There are some advanced features in the administration menu that we liked the look of. One was the ability to restrict color printing to certain users. This can save a significant amount of money for companies that print a lot. You can elect to either only push monochrome drivers to client computers or restrict color printing by password.

The drawers are solid and easy to use. The largest one exposing the machine itself, which is necessary to add or change the toner. While we’re on the subject, standard black toner will produce up to 5000 pages, where the colors can do 4000. Like the toners for all Dell products, they are competitively priced and work well. They are also relatively easy to fit and remove.

The 3115cn is fully PCL and Postscript compliant. Text documents were printed quicker with the Postscript driver and images come out quicker with the PCL drivers. Test reproduction is crisp and clear, with larger images having an even spread across. Graphics aren’t so good, but are still respectable enough for most implementations.

The Dell 3115cn is a workhorse printer. It is designed and built to produce standard business documentation steadily and reliably throughout the day. The prints are good quality and the scanning is quick and accurate. An ideal device for most offices.
