Infotec configuration page instructions

In general, Infotec copiers are the same as Ricoh copiers, just branded differently.  If you know your Infotec copiers model number, you can look it up on Ricohs model cross reference table to find the Ricoh model number, and with the Ricoh model number you can find the configuration page instructions.  For example, an Infotec IS 2175 is comparable to a Ricoh Aficio 2075.

Ricoh Aficio 1060

The Ricoh Aficio 1060 is an excellent machine for the medium to large office, with a good set of features. Priced to compete in that market it does perform very well, as you would expect from Ricoh. The name is now synonymous with quality and reliability for a decent price.

While there are many copiers on the market, they don’t come as well-built as this monochrome Aficio 1060. It is capable of printing and copying, and does them all with almost languid ease.

There are three ways of connecting the device, USB, Ethernet and parallel. The USB option is the easiest to set up, but offers slower transfer speeds than Ethernet. Adding the Aficio 1060 to a network was easy, with it appearing in our workgroup as soon as we had connected it. That is no small thing.

The control panel is well designed and simple to use. There are large buttons that allows you to choose between features and commands, while the LCD screen clearly shows you what’s going on. The controls can be controlled via icons on the screen giving a graphical representation of the commands. This significantly speeds up menu navigation and makes the device a pleasure to work with.

Output is good, with prints coming out at 60 pages per minute for at up to 1200 dpi. Text is clear with clean edges and no bleeding. Grayscale was even and well distributed and reproduction was extremely good overall. The automatic duplexer and the ability to print both sides of a sheet at once, is one of the reasons the Aficio 1060 is such a good copier.

Paper is held in a pair of 500 sheet capacity drawers at the front. Toner can be removed and replaced quickly and efficiently. Replacement cartridges can produce 43000 pages,. Retailers like quikshiptoner.com sells cartridges for $35 which is excellent value.

The paper drawers can be expanded, as can the memory. There is also the option to add a scanner, wireless networking, and document storage.

For businesses or workgroups who need a long lasting, reliable machine will do well to consider the Aficio 1060. It has enough features, and produces documents of a quality suitable for almost any use. The consumables are available and affordable enough to make the cost of ownership low enough to be attractive to many companies.

NEC SuperScript 870

Personal laser printers are becoming more affordable as the market becomes saturated with quality offerings. While the technology is only really suited to document printing, image reproduction can be surprisingly good. The NEC SuperScript 870 is such a printer.

It is a nice compact unit, that is very simple to install. Once unpacked, the toner fits right into its slot, fill it with paper and it’s ready to go. The drivers are straightforward and will have you running in a few minutes. The only thing the printer lacks is an Ethernet connection, there isn’t any built in.

As this printer is geared towards SOHO setups it shouldn’t make too much difference, but if business expansion was a possibility then this may not be the printer for you. NEC have plenty of larger or more scalable devices in their stable that may be more suitable.

Print quality is excellent for text and good for images. Text was finely detailed with very straight edges. Image quality was clear and accurate, certainly good enough for office needs. The grayscale was evenly distributed but some large shaded areas looked a little fuzzy. The detail was still there and the picture was as clear as day.

It prints at a respectable 8 pages per minute and is quiet when working. Paper is fed in from the top and output at the bottom. The capacity isn’t the largest in the world, but adequate for a small or home office. Toner is accessed through a flap at the front and are easy enough to get to, and replace. Prices are reasonable, with a toner lasting for around 6000 pages, and a drum which is good for 20000.

As this is pointed firmly at home or small office users who don’t print a lot of documents, this is a well priced device. The NEC brand is solid one, and they produce some good quality equipment. There is no reason why the SuperScript 870 should be any different.

OkiData C9650n

The OkiData C9650n is a standard laser printer that offers both black and white and colored printing. It utilizes Single Pass Color™ Digital technology that can offer printing quality up to 307 gsm index. Tabloid-extra/A3, with its 12" x 18" size, is accommodated on the Okidata C9650n and it can also support banner sheets up to 12.9" wide by 47.24".

Color printing on the Okidata C9650n offers high definition printing and has high quality toner cartridges available in the entire four color spectrum. Maximum resolution on OkiData’s C9650n is 1200 x 600 dpi. The duty cycle is 150,000 pages though the Okidata C9650n does perform better even with higher number of papers printed in any given month. Duplexing is available on the C9650n and is an automatic feature. There is a 530-sheet universal tray along with a 230-sheet multi-purpose tray. The Okidata C9650n can hold up to 2,880 sheets.

The OkiData C9650n has a powerful 800MHz processor along with 512MB standard RAM that is expandable to 1GB. The printer is compatible with PCL® 5c, PCL 6, Adobe PostScript 3™ and Direct PDF Printing. Connectivity features include 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet, High-speed USB v2.0 and parallel ports. Direct PDF printing is a welcome addition as it enables people to save time in converting documents into word format before sending print commands.

PrintSuperVision is recommended software for the Okidata C9650n as it offers internet based data and print control and makes things easier for office workers. Job Accounting Software is great software that is supported by the Okidata C9650n. The usage of this software enables office workers to have a complete control over printing jobs, checks on printer use and the number of sheets used and printing jobs completed. High capacity two piece consumables cut the cost down and make the Okidata C9650n an affordable purchase.

The C9650n is a great purchase for large offices and companies that want a one-stop printing solution. The Okidata C9650n is relatively affordable and has low maintenance costs. It isn’t really ideal for homes and small offices as they don’t have a high enough printing demand to make the most of the capabilities of the machine. For a medium to large office, this machine would be a workhorse device that won’t let you down.

Canon Copier ImageClass MF4270

The Canon Copier ImageClass MF4270 is a decent multifunction device that offers everything a home office needs at a reasonable price.

Measuring only 18 inches by 15.5 by 17.5 inches and weighing 28 pounds, this won’t take up too much desk space. This puts it right into the sights of the home worker, or home office. Space is often precious when working at home, so the footprint of any device is of more importance than many manufacturers realize. Fortunately Canon isn’t one of those.

What is also refreshing is the black and dark gray styling. It makes a nice change from standard beige or gray and will look cool on a modern desk next to a black and silver monitor.

Despite the compact size the MF4270 can still find room for 250 page paper cassette and an automatic document feeder that can hold a further 35. Toner is good for 2000 pages, which means for a low use home office, this device doesn’t need much looking after.

The only chink in the armor of this machine is that it needs to be connected via USB to get the best out of it. Even though it comes with a built-in network port, some scanning functions won’t work over a network. To get the best out of the MF4270, it would have to be connected to a PC via USB, then networked. Not a show stopper, but an odd choice for Canon to have made.

It can print and fax over a network, can work as a standalone fax and copier and can work as a fully featured all in one. Print quality is good, as one would expect from Canon, with text being the highlight of the show. The quality is superb, as you would expect from a laser, but stands out even among other laser products. Edges are clean and sharp, fonts are well printed and any filling is smooth and even. Copying or printing image or photo heavy documents presented no problems either, with the MF4270 chewing them up and spitting them out at the same rate as text pages.

The Canon Copier ImageClass MF4270 is an odd beast, with the USB functionality being better than its network one. However as this is aimed at small or home offices it doesn’t prove much of a problem. The speed and quality of the prints is what makes this a winner.

Apple printers

Apple made several different lines of printers, and none of them printed a "true" configuration page from the printer itself like many other brands of printers do.  But they could print startup pages or test pages, which sometimes contained page counts and other information.

LaserWriter series:
Apples LaserWriter printers by default print out a startup page a couple of minutes after you turn them on.  This startup page typically includes information like page count, amount of memory, ROM version, and other communication settings.

In addition to the startup page, you can print a configuration page through a computer connected to the printer or the printers network using the Apple utility.  The instructions for printing this configuration page vary by model, and the configuration page includes different information than the startup page.

StyleWriter series:
StyleWriter printers can print a test page, which might not contain anything more than the ROM version and a pattern or design.

Brother MFC 6800

The Brother MFC-6800 is a multi-function laser machine that can be used for high quality printing, copying, scanning and faxing. Due to its compact shape and capability, this machine is perfect for using in small offices or for home workers. The reasonable price and variety of functions this laser printer, copier and fax machine has to offer makes it a popular choice among small office users.

For several years this laser machine has been serving its clients without complaint. The build quality, feature-set and reliability all combine to make a decent machine that won’t let you down.

It has the capacity to hold up to 200 pages to provide a smooth supply of paper when copying or printing large jobs. At a speed of 10 pages per minute it has the ability to produce 99 copies of 600 x 600 dpi resolution. Whether you want to copy magazines, books or anything else, this machine offers quick and reliable printing at a highly affordable price.

Besides being used as a copier, the Brother MFC-6800 can also be used as a scanner. Although the machine is multi faceted, it has separate work panels and controls for each function. While the printer’s controls are a little complex, the scanner is pretty straightforward with a “scan to” button on the front panel. Similarly the fax system functions pretty well also. It is fast with a speed of 14.4kbps and has an 8MB memory which stores up to 500 pages. The fax system offers document feeding options for a text of almost 30 pages.

In addition to all the above mentioned functions, the Brother MFC-6800 offers flexibility to work with Windows and iMac/iBook or G3/G4 applications. At a highly reasonable price the customers can benefit from added features like duplexing too. However there are certain compromises to the large number of benefits the customers are provided through this multi-function. First and foremost the paper tray is not very large. Secondly the printer controls offer a certain level of complexity. Thirdly, if not properly placed in the tray, paper can get stuck. Those are very minor niggles in what is an otherwise excellent product. Even with those downsides the positives still outweigh the negatives by a fair margin.

The Brother MFC-6800 is a perfect device for offices looking for an all in one solution for copying, printing, faxing and scanning. It’s also very economical with a toner cartridge that can go for ages without needing replacing.

Lexmark C935

Is the printer at your workplace too slow in getting the printing work done for all your employees? Are the printing job queues getting too long for comfort? Then you have to look for a larger printer that can cater for a large workgroup. These are the reasons for which I got the Lexmark C935 laser printer for my office where we have a heavy load of printing work every day. I realized that printers in the 20 pages per minute range could simply not cater for the printing workload in a larger office. It is quite costly, but it’s almost a onetime investment and it pays off.

The Lexmark C935 laser printer promises a printing speed of up to 45 pages per minute for black and white prints and up to 40 pages per minute for colored ones. The actual speed is a little less than that but overall I am pretty satisfied as introduction of this machine to my office has improved our work efficiency by a considerable degree.

The toners in the printer last for a longer time, saving me money. The Lexmark C935 has an extendable built in memory of 512Mb which coupled with the internal processor give a high speed in color printing. A major advantage that I have of keeping the machine at my office is the built in Ethernet port, which allows me to connect it over a network and all my employees have easy access and the printing work carries on smoothly throughout the day.

This newer model in the market has a sheet capacity of 2180 pages, which I think is quite enough. The separate multi paper tray allows for different types of paper to be used for printing. The Lexmark C935 is compatible with most of the current operating systems on PC’s and Mac’s. I have not encountered any real problems with installation and the software so far.

The Lexmark C935 is a huge machine and it is not easy to move it around. But that goes fairly well with the huge paper capacity it offers. The color prints are amazing and the HQ photos we print give a great look makes you feel that it’s worth the money spent. The laser printer comes with a one year warranty with on site repair facility. The Lexmark C935 laser printer is a machine I specifically recommend for a large office, otherwise, for smaller workloads, it might be a bit of overdoing buying this huge machine.

HP OfficeJet 6210

What could be a better way to utilize your work space to the fullest than purchase a machine that is multi functional. Hewlett Packard has been working to serve this market for a long time now. Being one of the top printer manufacturers globally, they have developed several models and modifications of the laser mono printers over the years. One of the most popular of their product range is an all in one HP OfficeJet 6210.

With the chassis of an ordinary laser printer, this device serves the user’s requirements for black and white as well as color. Whether you want to print text, large documents, pictures, images or diagrams, the quality is exceptional and better than that offered by most similar machines. With up to 1200 dpi print resolution and 2400 dpi scan resolution, the print looks vibrant and realistic with great detailing and clarity.

I bought the machine due to its compact look unaware of the range of benefits it has to offer to the users. The HP OfficeJet 6210 printer can be placed in any corner of the office if you are short on space and allows as many as 5 computer systems to be directly connected to it. It also allows for additional HP external wired system connectivity. This feature was great for my small business as it enabled all workers to use the system without any interference or hindrance.

Through the 20 pages auto document feeder, 4800dpi resolution and 4 ink color toner, anything including photos can be printed on any kind of media. I have also taken several prints on envelopes and glossy papers and the results have always been pretty consistent.

One unique feature of HP OfficeJet 6210 is its HP Instant Share feature which prevents burdening the system and allows documents and photos to be shared by networked systems. PictBridge-enabled camera or a USB port available on the machine can be used for feeding the necessary photos as an input. This particular feature has been a milestone to my business’s promotion requirements. I have designed and printed brochures and numerous posters as well as similar marketing material using my very own computer system and HP OfficeJet 6210.

Besides being an exceptional printer I have also used HP OfficeJet 6210 for scanning and copying. At a speed of 33.6kbps I can fax any document anywhere I need. Since my purchase there has not been a single day when HP OfficeJet 6210 failed to serve my business requirements. It was indeed a very good purchase.

Gestetner DSm 735

I have just recently purchased the Gestetner DSm-735 and I must say that it was a great decision that I made for my business. I run a small consumer goods supply business and we are always in dire need of copying, faxing and printing. The Gestetner DSm-735 has all these features and then some.

It was easy to set up the Gestetner DSm-735 as detailed instructions were given on the user manual. I just had to follow the steps and I was able to complete the procedure within 15 minutes.

The Gestetner DSm-735 has a standard paper capacity of 1,050 sheets and a maximum of 3,550 sheets if I am using optional paper banks. Automatic duplexing is available on the Gestetner DSm-735 and this is a great feature for our business. Many other features including punching holes into the paper, multiple stapling and booklet finishing options which are also available. As for the quality, The Gestetner DSm-735 uses great toner cartridge that gives crisp printing features.

The Gestetner DSm-735 is a champion when it comes to connectivity. It can receive direct commands from a web browser program and its 40Gb memory can store many documents including those with password protection that are only released when a person familiar with these passwords accesses the copier.

Facsimile features utilize a 33.6 Kbps modem with auto fallback and offers up to three G3 fax lines along with dual access. LAN-Fax option is available and we have installed it on our workstations to speed up the process.

The printer features offer 600 x 600 dpi networks printing with standard 10Base-T/100Base-TX, USB 2.0 interface. PDF direct printing and other features are also available.

The best part about the printer is its scanner printing option. It can scan a maximum paper size of 11" x 17" at 600dpi with 256 grayscales; network scanning is done at 52 ppm at 200 dpi. TIFF, TIFF-F, Multi page TIFF, PDF and JPEG formats are supported on the Gestetner DSm-735. The scanner has embedded scan to email, scan to folder, scan-to-URL and scan-to-FTP features.

Security features on The Gestetner DSm-735 include password protection, Windows/LDAP authentication and other features. I am totally satisfied with these security features and we do not have to implement any further security measures.

In conclusion, I will recommend the Gestetner DSm-735 for its all-purpose use in any company or business. I am totally satisfied with its performance and have no regrets on purchasing the Gestetner DSm-735. I am hoping the same for other buyers of the Gestetner DSm-735.

Brother Intellifax 4100E – Things You Should Know

Overview
If you are looking for a stand-alone fax machine that has an amazing transmission speed of 33.6 kbps, the Brother Intellifax 4100E is perfect for you. If we compare it to older Brother models we will notice that the speed was a lot lower: only 14.4 kbps. This upgrade added tremendous benefits for people interested in fax machines.

Pros
Just like I said earlier, older models weren’t too impressive in terms of speed. Brother Intellifax 4100E has a built-in Super G3 modem that allows it to transmit 1 page in only 2-3 seconds. Brother Intellifax 4100E couldn’t get the job done in less than 6 seconds. Now when you look at these numbers, you only see them as numbers, but when you will stand in the front of the device waiting for it to transmit a dozen pages to 100 locations, you should probably bring dinner with you because you will get hungry while waiting.
Another great feature that non-digital fax models lack is the ability to store data in the RAM memory. In this case you will benefit from a RAM memory of 8MB which means that you will be able to scan about 500 pages before it is full. However, do know that it’s unlikely that you will achieve this number since the device transmits the pages that you already scanned while you are scanning some more documents. The docs are stored in the memory offering you the possibility to go to work on your other tasks after you are done scanning. It will run on its own faxing the data to the desired locations. Because of its built-in memory you also get higher levels of security in case that you will face an electric or paper outage.
Some modern faxes offer you the possibility to connect your own cordless phone to the device. However, Brother doesn’t think this is necessary and is proud to wear its corded handset. It looks like trends pressures don’t have an effect on these guys. Because of this fact, you will get rid of an extra piece of hardware to manage: your mobile phone. The machine can switch by itself from the modem to the handset so that you can easily make land line calls. This really simplifies things for your sake.

Cons
What’s bad about this device is that it only offers you fax features and some basic printing and scanning. It fully lacks the ability to copy documents which is pretty lame compared to multifunctional printers that are so popular these days. It also lacks some USB ports that would have improved the printing feature. However, assuming that it had those USBs, the printing speed would have been pretty bad anyway so it doesn’t make much of a difference.
If you are ok with a stand-alone fax, this device could suit your needs. On the other hand, if you are concerned with space efficiency and multi-functionality you should probably take a look at MFC multifunctional printers that are also manufactured by Brother.

Samsung CLX 6240fx

The Samsung CLX-6240fx is a color multifunction laser printer that is big in size, and in features.

The multifunction device arena is a tough one. With competitors such as Brother and Xerox dominating the market, it is a hard nut to crack. Samsung have made a valiant effort with the CLX-6240fx, and it is definitely a worthy contender. It is a full duplex machine that can output both color and monochrome prints at a rate of 25 pages per minute.

Print quality is good, especially in mono. Text is clear and sharp, with edges appearing straight and accurate. Images and pictures were understandable average. Color documents and charts had a tendency to come out light, but a minute with the control suite soon sorted that one out. Then color was printed accurately and with perfect tone and contrast.

Scanning is also good, and it has the added bonus of being able to scan from or to USB flash drives, the network or directly connected PCs. The scanned images are of good quality, and color reproduction seemed clear and true.

The fax is a straightforward affair, being controlled from either the desktop or the control panel. It has the usual redial, memory, fax from desktop and other features and includes just about everything an active scanner would need.

The CLX-6240fx also includes an 80Gb hard drive, which is a nice feature. It means that you can load print jobs and let it get on with it while you do something else. Normally this is done from memory, but this feature offers a lot of flexibility. You can also schedule print jobs, so if you have a lot that needs printing, but don’t want to monopolize the printer, you can schedule it for during the night or the next morning.

Paper and toner is loaded from drawers in the front. The paper drawer can only hold 350 sheets, but an additional drawer can be added to take it to 600. The toner and drums are easy to replaces, merely opening the case and unclipping them, before replacing them the same way.

Overall the CLX-6240fx is a solid performer. It does everything a multifunction should do, with a quality you would expect from a company like Samsung. A worthy entry into a market that is already competitive. It offers enough features to keep even the busiest and most demanding offices happy, while remaining economical enough to not have to worry about the cost every time you print something.

Canon ImageClass D661

Nowadays the most important factor for small business success is how to reduce cost. One way of doing this is by considering document handling requirements and looking at replacing outdated equipment.

Canon strives to take an environmentally and people friendly approach to product design and lifecycle and one of their initiatives is to try reducing the environmental burden of its products. ImageClass laser printers are one of the product range offered by Canon which are considerate to both people and the environment.

Canon ImageClass D661 is a two-in-one laser printer and copy machine that is affordable for a small office set up. It has a copy speed of about 13 pages per minute. Its warm up time is a little slow at 13 seconds. But its 30 sheet automatic document feeder compensates when dealing with larger copy loads. The D661 has a 500 sheet front loading cassette that makes it an easy to use device with a 100 sheet multipurpose tray. Huge paper storage capacity is one of the best features among devices of this caliber.

The D661’s single cartridge system is an enhanced feature providing 5000 pages at five percent density. Changing the toner is easy, just pull down the flap and swap the cartridge out. It’s an economical package with a toner and drum in one replaceable unit providing image clarity and excellent output.

The D661 has been re-manufactured to meet modern standards. Its specifications are maybe a bit of overkill for a home business but they are all nice-haves. There can sometimes be a problem with paper jams, but the path is easily followed to clear them out. The one touch system, collating multi page documents, paper storage, paper handling and USB interface are compensation to this little inconveniences anyway. The printing technology results in a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi and 1200 x 600 dpi software emulation quality with an equipped printing memory of 2 MB.

OkiData C3200

The OkiData C3200 is a single pass color LED printer that provides good quality printing at a decent price. Aimed squarely at the small business or office, it can handle most things you can throw at it.

The control panel is just a matter of four LEDs, no screen, and a couple of buttons. It doesn’t have to feature anything else as it’s a printer, not a multifunction.

The toner cartridges themselves are pretty standard. The C3200 comes with the usual starter toners which will last for a thousand sheets or so. Changing the toner is simply a matter of lifting the lid and exposing the recess. They all sit horizontally in the bay and can all be removed easily. The package contains a starter toner which print around 2000 pages. New ones should last around 5000 for an average business document both black and color.

At an estimated 12 pages per minute for color and 20 for mono, the C3200 is no slouch. The print quality is very good, with the ink being spread evenly over large images and text, while being fine and sharp on even the smallest text. Printing grayscale documents also produced good results, with ink spread evenly across the whole image, with a good range of shades to simulate the color.

The top of the C3200 opens like a clam shell to allow access to the toners and drums underneath. The LEDs are fixed to the lid to prevent damage when changing the cartridges.

The drums and cartridges all lift out to expose much of the machinery underneath. This makes clearing paper jams easy as pretty much the whole path is open for you to see inside. Not that you will get any jams. The simple, straight paper path keeps the potential for jamming to a minimum, and the single pass system won’t keep the paper too long anyway.

With a simple, well thought out design, simple operation and faultless printing, the Oki C3200 is a user friendly, reliable printer. The ease of operation, coupled with reasonable running costs make this a worthwhile contender in the SOHO printer market.

Ricoh Aficio 1515

The Ricoh Aficio 1515 continues the company’s habit of making a single model of a device but giving three different configuration options with it. The Aficio 1515 is a standard office copier, while the Aficio 1515F adds a fax, and the Aficio 1515MF adds the rest of the multiple functions and is a printer, copier, scanner and fax.

The Aficio 1515 series is built around flexibility. Multi-tasking is the name of the game here, with almost any task being able to be run while doing something else. Extensive use of scheduling, multi-threading and process flows allow faxes to be used while copying, faxes to be stored while faxing, scanning to be done while faxing and so on. This is all aimed at wasting as little time as possible on administration, improving productivity of the office.

Printing and copying are good, solid functions with the Aficio 1515. It carries on the Ricoh reputation for quality by producing good quality, reproductions every time. Toner spread is even across large images or text, there is no bleeding, jagging or any other unpleasantness when copying. At 15 copies or prints per minute across the board, the Aficio 1515 isn’t going to break speed records, but the ability to combine the operation with so many others makes it a viable product for a busy environment.

The standard paper tray can hold 250 sheets of legal sized paper. This can be expanded with another drawer. Combined with the multi-purpose tray and automatic document feeder, the paper capacity can be maximized to 850 sheets.

The standard Aficio 1515 can be connected via USB or parallel, but the Aficio 1515MF has full networking capabilities. It also adds fax from desktop and broadcast fax capabilities as well as easy access to workgroup or network printing. There are optional upgrades to wireless or even Bluetooth printing if additional network cards are purchased.

The toners are a bargain at $19 each for 7000 sheets worth of copying, which makes the Aficio 1515 even more attractive.

The real strength of this machine is the solid copying capability, quietness of operation and flexibility on the higher models. The basic Aficio 1515 is still a solid performer, but the Aficio 1515MF is the jewel in the crown. A truly multi-tasking office device that will have users speeding through administrative tasks in no time at all.

Brother MFC 7420

While we live in a Technicolor world, not everyone needs to print in color. For those looking for a no-nonsense multifunction machine, the Brother MFC-7420 is ideal. Easy to install, configure and use, if you’re looking for a good quality monochrome multifunction printer then the MFC-7420 is just right.

It is a light duty printer, having a duty cycle of around 10000 copies per month, so isn’t suitable for heavy users. It will fit right in to a small office or workgroup who need the flexibility for those times when they do need to print, scan, copy or fax.

Faxing is simple with the easy to use interface, clear keys and bright LCD display. There are speed dials, phone memories, enough built in memory to record up to 500 pages of fax, and a dual action feature which allows faxes to be loaded while the fax is transmitting or receiving. Transmission rate is one page every 4 seconds, and built in error correction prevents the need for retransmissions.

Printing and copying are just as simple. The print quality is as sharp as you would expect from a laser device. The blacks are black and grayscale is a good representation of an original color image. For printing the standard business document the MFC-7420 is peerless. It produces good quality prints at a rate of 20 pages per minute at a resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi.

Paper is handled by either a 250 sheet paper tray or a 35 sheet automatic document feeder. Both work well, move slickly and don’t jam. Toner is supplied as a starter cartridge which is good for 1500 sheets. The standard ones will last a good 2500 and are priced around $30 which is good value for money. Every 12000 sheets or so you will need to replace the drum which will set you back around $58.

Scanning is straightforward, as scanning generally is. There is the glass flatbed, or the automatic document feeder. You can scan onto file, pdf or email.

Connection is via USB or parallel port, both are easy to install and set up. USB was a breeze on a Windows XP computer, being picked up and installed within a couple of minutes.

Cheap to buy, with respectable running costs thanks to the cheap consumables. Well recommended for the small office or workgroup.
